The origins of Valentines Day are a bit dark and brutal. The Romans began celebrating the feast of Lupercalia in February. This feast was all about fertility. It consisted of sacrificing animals, beating women, drunkenness and nakedness. (But then again we are talking about ancient Rome.) By the fifth century, the brutality was put aside and it became more about the party. As time went by, the holiday grew sweeter. Chaucer and Shakespeare romanticized it in their work. In the middle ages handmade paper cards were given as tokens of love. In 1913, Hallmark Cards of Kansas City, Mo., began mass producing valentines. February has not been the same since.Today, the holiday is big business. According to market research, Valentine’s Day sales reached $17.6 billion last year; this year’s sales are expected to total $18.6 billion. Extremely commercialized! I feel we should show love to ourselves and to others everyday and not just one day a year.
Show love to yourself and others by giving the gift of living healthy and using organic, non toxic products. I hope all of you have a wonderful Valentines Day.
